Macmillan Cancer

Macmillan Cancer Support, to give the full name.  I wonder if that’s why so many people support this worthwhile charity because it has SUPPORT in its name.  I would imagine that it’s one thing to have Cancer but it’s the support you and your loved ones need that is of paramount importance.

I have been ‘touched’ by Cancer many times in my life.  This year I have lost five friends to the disease; three of whom have been younger than I am.  Before you ask, it is not because I am older, it is, for me, that Cancer does not judge, it attacks.

I have also known people who have had it, beaten it, only for it to return but have beaten it again.  Although I’m not sure if ‘beaten’ is really the most appropriate word.  They are still alive today to tell their story.

Macmillan Cancer

I’ve been privileged to be involved in many fund raising events for Breast Cancer Awareness; Cancer Research; Macmillan Cancer Support and many more.

Only last week I was humbled to be at a golf event which was part of a fund raiser which accumulated over £20,000.  It is incredible what individuals do to support the charity which has most relevance to them.  It gives them strength and a purpose.

May they long continue to do so.

The World is Your Oyster

The World is your Oyster was an expression I heard from an early age.  I wondered what it meant; especially as Oysters don’t seem particularly appetizing.

I saw it as different things but the definition of it is

You can achieve anything you wish in life or go anywhere because you have the opportunity or ability to do so

I wonder how many people actually believe that.  Some people don’t feel they have the opportunity due to their upbringing or personal circumstances.  Others don’t feel they have the ability to do what they want to.

Again, from an early age, I looked for ways to DO things rather than NOT do them.  If someone told me I couldn’t, I looked for ways in which I could.  Some would call that stubborn – I call it challenging myself.

I remember when I was at school I was appointed Captain of School – more commonly known as Games Captain.  I hadn’t been at that school for a year and I was told that, even though I was the best candidate, I was unlikely to get the role.  I secretly wanted it; I thought about, how I would feel if I got it and then found myself dreaming about it.  It seemed, as if by magic, that I received the role.  What a day that was.

More recently I found myself starting to believe that I could win our Club Championship at our Golf Club.  I mentally prepared myself for the day and, as if by magic, I won the competition.  I’m still in a daze about it.

Club Champion

So, remember the definition

You can achieve anything you wish in life or go anywhere because you have the opportunity or ability to do so

So get wishing as the World is your Oyster.

Isabel M Castle

Isabel M Castle is my mother, and it’s her birthday today; although she is no longer with us.  I Googled her and was amazed that Isabel M Castle Artist is first on Google Search.  Not only that but she takes up the whole first page!

I’ve always known my mother was talented.  She used to dress shop windows; she went in to hairdressing when one of her ‘stylists’ didn’t turn up for work one day; she went on to compete in the National L’Oreal Competition at the Royal Albert Hall.  When we went on holiday to Italy she learnt Italian; doing the same when we went to Greece.  She fed her mind constantly.  She auditioned and went onto 15 to 1 – the television programme.  When a family friend did Amateur Rally Driving she became his navigator.  These are just a few of her achievements.

A friend said to me not so long ago that I always look on the positive side and always look at how I can do something.  In remembering Mum today it’s so obvious where I get that from.

Thanks for being my inspiration Mum.  Like you – I’ll keep pushing myself to improve and get the most out of this wonderful life.
